Leyden is a small, rural town north of Greenfield, with about 700 residents living on farms, in old homesteads, and in modest homes along winding country roads. It's close to Greenfield by the map but feels much more remote.

Oil and propane heat every home here. The roads climb steadily from the valley, and the elevation means colder temperatures and more heating demand than the towns below. Many homes are older with original or outdated heating equipment.
